Rated 3 out of 5 by Taylor from Black felt had changed My hubby is a taxidermist and has used the black felt for years on bear rugs. We purchase several bolts at a time. The last material we received (Jan 2024) is much thinner than what we have received in the past. The quality of the product is not the same.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Mine from Don’t know about the fabric but the store is horrble Made on order online for pickup. Got an email that it is ready and the store is open until 8pm. Drove all the way to the store, and guess what, store is closed, no one to talk to, customer support may bother getting back to me sometime next year.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Linda from Missing items I ordered several items on Nov 27. Only two items have arrived . I’ve checked on the order and it says”processing” . I’ve contacted customer service four days ago and haven’t heard back. I’m very disappointed and will not be ordering from Joann again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by KEH SF from fabric shipped in two separate orders - still waiting for one piece I bought 2 yards of felt. I assumed it would be one long piece. For unknown reasons, the felt is being shipped in two separate pieces and in two separate packages. The second piece has not yet arrived. I would not order fabric online again because of not knowing if it would come as one piece or split up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Rosie65 from Felt I needed a strong felt and a little thicker than those cutouts you find . This is the perfect felt for my project, plus it is wide enough to last me for a long time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Brandy from Be warned if you order multiples yards! I ordered 10 yards and was sent multiple packages (4) to make 10 yards. They also charged per shipment and voided out any coupons/discounts since they split my order. They charged my card way more than what I should have paid.

Rated 5 out of 5 by A Rodriguez from Perfect color I bought this felt a month ago and I so please with the color antique white and the quality of the material. My project turned out so pretty.

FAQs

What is the difference between true felt and craft felt? ›

For starters, craft felt is created with manmade fibers, mostly plastic and synthetic fibers, which have been needled and/or heat processed to cause the fibers to adhere to one another. Wool felt is made primarily or entirely from natural animal fibers, mostly, sheep wool.

What thickness felt for crafts? ›

1mm or 2mm thick felts are best for ornaments and dollmaking. 3mm is sometimes available, but too thick for our purposes. This has varying proportions (40 – 60%) of wool with synthetic fibres, is usually 1-2mm thick and is widely available in all sorts of colours.

How durable is craft felt? ›

Felt is durable and easy to cut and work with. That said, it is pretty rigid and can shrink over time.

Is craft felt a good insulator? ›

Felt is an excellent material and a good insulator because it catches air and can capture much air. Felt is also suitable for the insulating temperature. Let us suppose, for example; we have an ice cube; felt holds the ice cube from converting a liquid because it acts as a natural insulator.

Can craft felt get wet? ›

Wool felted products can absorb roughly half of their weight in water and be fully soaked without having any catastrophic damages. However, leaving the felt products for too long in water can eventually damage or destroy your felt crafts and items.

Can you wash craft felt? ›

Yes, it is possible to wash felt fabric. Handwashing is always the best and safest method for washing felt accessories, blankets, and other items. Felt is sensitive to water temperature and agitation, and it can shrink if not treated properly.

What type of felt is best for crafts? ›

Craft/Fashion Felt

This type of felt is usually 100% synthetic and man-made, the felt is usually acrylic. Craft felt comes in many colours and widely available at major craft stores and online. Most craft felt comes in thin pre-cut sheets.

What needle do you use for felt crafts? ›

Generally, small to medium embroidery needles are suitable for hand sewing felt projects. Medium 70/10 or 80/12 needles work best for sewing with felt on a sewing machine.

What thread to use for felt craft? ›

When sewing felt by hand, use strengthened polyester thread, perle cotton, or embroidery floss for a decorative look. Embroidery floss is most commonly used for hand stitching felt, especially for felt appliqué. It's inexpensive and comes in a wide variety of colors.

How do you keep craft felt from pilling? ›

Prevent Aggressive Friction: Be gentle when working with your wet felt during felting and fulling. Avoid harsh rubbing or friction, as this can lead to pilling. Take it slow and use gentle, kneading motions during fulling. If you need to rub the felt, only do so on the side without embellishments.

How do you seal craft felt? ›

Because felt is so porous, the paint will bleed through (top example). You will need to seal it and in this case I used Mod Podge (bottom example). Mod Podge works well because it doesn't get entirely absorbed through the felt and sits on the surface of the felt. Once the Mod Podge is dry, add the layer of paint.

What are the disadvantages of felt fabric? ›

Felt tends to be a bit stiff and resistant whenever you compare it to woven fabrics. The most drawback is that once felt is stretched out of shape, there's no chance to return in the previous way or its original shape and size.

How do you get wrinkles out of craft felt? ›

flat, use a damp cloth between your felt and iron. The. steam will do most of the work and you will avoid. damaging your felt.

Is wool blend felt better than craft felt? ›

Wool Blend Felt

This is often called wool felt but it usually has no more than 25-40% wool in it, with the rest of the fabric made up of man-made fibres such as rayon (viscose) or acrylic. This felt is thinner and less dense than 100% wool felt but is usually more durable than a craft felt.

What are 3 types of felt? ›

As we mentioned, there are three main types of felt: natural, synthetic, and combined.

What is true felt fabric for? ›

Today, textile manufacturers primarily use felt to produce hats and other insulative substances such as boot linings. Thicker and harder than woven or knitted wool, felt provides an excellent barrier against cold temperatures, and this woolen material is not scratchy against the skin.

What kind of felt is best? ›

I consider wool blend felt to be the best of both worlds - it's durable and strong like pure wool felt but it's affordably priced too! You can share all you want with your kids while using the same felt for heirlooms for your grandchildren.

What is the best form of felt? ›

Wool Blend Felt

Viscose is a man made fibre which is very soft. The combination of wool and viscose results in a tight cloth with a soft handle that is cheaper than 100% wool felt. It is a very versatile fabric and ideal for both craft and dress projects. Wool blend felt comes in a wide range of colours.
