Capital projects always start on the first day of the financial year and end on its last day.Fact or fiction? It’s safe to say that’s a myth. But interestingly, most capital project portfolios are managed within these annualised parameters, with projects at the end of the year getting pushed up against fictitious financial year deadlines. In an ideal world, staggering projects throughout the year make far more sense to smooth out cashflow, but many applications do not allow for this kind of dynamic resource allocation.CAPEXinsights makes it simple to see what carryover projects are at play, what’s projected to finish when, and what capacity there is for new projects. For more, read here ▶ https://lnkd.in/g4p4p4a8#CAPEXinsights#CapitalProjects#CapitalProjectPortfolio#PortfolioOptimisation

A significant investment will flood into capital projects over the next decade - many long-standing operational organisations today will be challenged to plan and deliver these major projects with the speed and operational efficiency the influx requires! A project-centric approach also may not work for decarbonizing existing assets, which is a capital-intensive effort that requires long-term planning. These bring many unique challenges and opportunities to these organisations. The entire structure and culture of most of these organisations is based around a low-risk exposure within the operational context where the primary driver is to keep the assets running reliably and efficiently. Organisational processes are generally deliberately risk averse, slow to adapt, and built specifically to discourage change. In this environment, the new investment brings massive change by not only introducing significant new assets and technologies, but also changing the organisation over a short period of time by using a delivery method which is fundamentally different to many existing practices and operational culture of the parent organisation. We thought better to ask Wes Horwood, Head of Future Energy Projects CS Energy about his experience on these challenges and some lessons learnt at the coming RISK 2023 Conference, 7/8 Sep at Brisbane. Wes noted a better risk-driven approach is a portfolio-synergistic strategy in which planning is top-down across the portfolio, with the key objective being to develop and deliver each project so that the overall results of the capital projects portfolio are optimized. Implementing this new portfolio capital projects management would be a major business challenge, requiring proactive stakeholders identification and management, markets expertise, and an understanding of complex approval processes, as well as the ability to source the necessary talent, proactively manage supply chain constraints, implement an Integrated Project Controls across portfolio, and obviously measure and communicate progress accurately against target objectives and goals.Wes will share his views on some key concurrent risk themes:- Project delivery with a First to Market driver- Portfolio-synergistic approach vs Operational Asset Risk Frameworks- Delivering major projects with a Project Delivery Culture vs an Operational Culture- Transition to Operations and Integration of new assets and technology with an organisation that has never done this before- Opportunities for Digital Engineering to a fundamentally spreadsheet and 2D drawing based culture- Organisational Change Management - The effect of the Olympics infrastructure boom - Striking the balance between a Project Delivery Risk Hierarchy and an Operational Risk HierarchyRegistration is now open - come and join us to discuss, learn and get ready for challenges ahead - https://lnkd.in/gSdJgRWn

If there’s a shortcut to saving millions on flawed capital projects, it’s this:“The trick is to find out as quickly as possible if a project isn’t viable, so you incur minimal development costs before the project is cut.”Finding out if a project should be implemented undoubtedly requires money. Essential governance is a major driver of success. But by using development gates, you’re starting with a small amount of money on sensing whether a capital project will fly. With each development gate, there is potential to identify and stop flawed capital projects before they move forward, ultimately saving millions in time and money. Read our article about cutting your losses before you spend millions. ▶ https://bit.ly/464XDRF#CAPEXinsights #PortfolioAnalysis #ProjectPlanning #CapitalProjects#CapEx #ProjectEngineering

The annual capital project portfolio build system is broken. Right now, most companies plan millions of dollars of capital investments using spreadsheets and manual processes. Over months of tedious work, characterised by political infighting, a portfolio is gradually assembled in time for the start of the financial year. This is not only slow, painful and wasteful – it’s also risky says Founder of CAPEXinsights, Mike Duell. With potentially hundreds of projects in the mix, and no possibility of rapidly aggregating spreadsheet information in a meaningful way, how can organisations ensure their capital project portfolio supports strategic priorities?Read this to discover how to build your capital project portfolio with the right governance model: https://bit.ly/3w8Rgxh#ProjectManagement #RiskManagement #businessprocess #CapitalProjects #Investment #StrategicPlanning #performance
