How much should you pay for bridesmaid dresses? ›

With the majority of brides expected to cover the cost of bridesmaid dresses, the price is predictably an important point. The survey – from women's fashion brand Oasis Fashion, found that 80% of brides spend more than £50 per dress – with the majority (44%) of brides spending between £51 and £100.

Brides often want their bridal party to coordinate in some manner, and that usually means selecting a specific dress style, color, pattern, or even a designer. The cost of bridesmaid dresses can vary widely, but on average, bridesmaids can expect to spend anywhere from $100 to $300 (or more) on their gown!

Bridesmaids might pay entirely (or help pay) for the dress, accessories, the wedding shower, a shower gift, the bachelorette party, travel and hotel for the wedding day, and a wedding gift. Bridesmaids might also pay for their hair and makeup on the day of. But if the bride requires this, the bride might cover it.

Ordering Your Dress Ahead of Time

In the US, the tradition is for the bridesmaids to each pay for their own dress, regardless of who is making the final call on what the dresses will look like. The bride should try to be flexible about the kind of dresses she chooses for her girls.

Asking bridesmaids at modern weddings to pay for their own dresses is relatively common, but it's important to give them plenty of time to afford it. Saving for a £200 dress is a much easier task if your wedding is two years away compared to just a couple of months.

I think of reds, golds, emerald greens, and royal blues in the Winter. Pastel palettes look fantastic in the Spring, as do yellows. The bright colours of pinks and purples in the sunshine of the Summer can look particularly fantastic. Finally, Autumn Wedding is a time for auburn, oranges, reds, and dark greens.

Bridesmaid dresses can be rather expensive, especially if you choose a well-known brand or designer, or choose to shop at a boutique wedding retailer. It is, of course, common for anything wedding-related to come with a premium price tag, as this is more likely to guarantee that your day is extra special.

Do bridesmaids pay for their hair and makeup? ›

This is completely up to you; if you feel comfortable footing these costs, go ahead! If not, it's perfectly acceptable to ask your bridesmaids to cover their own beauty bills (or at least split them).

The bride may agree to pay for makeup while the bridesmaid pays to get their hair done, for example. Depending on their ability, a bridesmaid may choose to do either their hair or makeup on their own to save herself or the bride money, says Shackleton.

Stash a few different bra styles (strapless, plunge bra, etc.) in a cute tote bag and bring them to your appointment. This will help you get a better sense of how the dress will look and fit.

It's usually customary that the bridesmaids pay for their own dresses. However, if the bride picked out a style that's out of your budget, it's okay to suggest another option instead.
